Amistad Reservoir: Fishing on a Large International Lake
Amistad Reservoir sits on the Rio Grande near Del Rio and is one of Texas's largest lakes, with good fishing for bass and catfish year-round.
Amistad Reservoir covers about 64,900 acres and stretches into Mexico. Largemouth bass fishing is popular here, especially in fall, winter, and spring. Smallmouth bass do better in the Devils River arm of the lake. White bass fishing peaks from late January through March during spawning runs. Catfish are available year-round.
One important warning: zebra and quagga mussels have invaded this reservoir. Texas Parks and Wildlife requires you to clean, drain, and dry your boat before leaving any infested water. Fishing on the Texas side uses standard Texas freshwater rules. If you cross into Mexican water, you need a Mexican fishing license, which is available in Del Rio. Check TPWD for current regulations before you go.
