Homestead Exemption
Homestead Exemption Can Lower Your Tax Bill
If your home is your primary residence in Val Verde County, you may qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces your taxable property value.
Texas law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on a primary residence. That means $140,000 of your home's value is not taxed by the school district. Other local taxing units, like the county, can add their own exemptions on top of that.
You file a one-time application with the Val Verde County Appraisal District. The general deadline to apply is before May 1 of the tax year, but confirm the current deadline with the appraisal district. You can download Form 50-114 from the Texas Comptroller's site. Check with the appraisal district about any local options beyond the state minimum.
