Public hunting land near Newton County: Angelina-Neches/Dam B WMA
The Angelina-Neches/Dam B Wildlife Management Area gives hunters and outdoor users access to public land in the Piney Woods region near Newton County.
The Angelina-Neches/Dam B WMA is managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife. It sits in Jasper and Tyler Counties, on the fork of the Angelina and Neches rivers near the B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir — close to but not in Newton County. It is open year-round. You can hunt feral hog, waterfowl, dove, squirrel, and other game there. Deer hunting is available through archery, general, and muzzleloader seasons, with drawn special permits required for some hunts. To hunt, you need a valid Texas hunting license plus at least one of these: an Annual Public Hunting Permit, a computer-drawn special permit, or a Regular Permit for daily small game hunting.
During firearm seasons, everyone on the area must wear hunter orange during daylight hours. That includes non-hunters. There are a few exceptions for turkey, waterfowl, and dove hunting. Youth hunters 16 and under need a license but not a permit, as long as a licensed and permitted adult is with them. Check the TPWD page for current maps, rules, and permit availability before you go.
