Homestead Exemption

How to file a homestead exemption in Newton County

If you own and live in your home in Newton County, you can apply for a homestead exemption to lower your property tax bill.

Texas law requires you to apply for most exemptions. You file with the Newton Central Appraisal District, not the tax office. The home must be your main residence. State law sets a general filing deadline, but the CAD is your contact if you miss it or have questions.

School district taxes are the biggest part of most property tax bills. The state requires school districts to offer a homestead exemption. There are also extra exemptions for people over 65 and for people with disabilities. File your application with the CAD at 109 Court St., Newton. Check the CAD website or the Texas Comptroller site for current forms and deadlines before you apply.
