A Geological Divide Splits Williamson County in Two
The Balcones Escarpment runs through Williamson County, separating rocky Hill Country terrain in the west from flat blackland prairie in the east.
The Balcones Escarpment cuts across Williamson County from north to south. West of the escarpment, land is hilly and averages around 850 feet in elevation. East of it, the terrain is flatter blackland prairie at around 600 feet.
This divide affects water sourcing, soil type, and farming potential. Western land tends to rely more on wells and features thin rocky soil, while eastern land has deep black clay soils historically used for cotton and row crops. If you are buying rural land, knowing which side of the escarpment you are on matters for drilling, drainage, and land use.
