San Angelo State Park Keeps a Bison and Longhorn Herd

San Angelo State Park maintains paddocks with bison and Texas longhorn cattle as part of its natural and historical interpretation.

San Angelo State Park keeps a small herd of bison and Texas longhorn cattle in viewing paddocks. These animals are the same kinds of wildlife and livestock that shaped this part of Texas. A dedicated wildlife observation area lets visitors see them up close without getting too near the herd.

The park has recorded over 300 bird species, 50 mammal species, and 42 reptile species on its grounds. That makes it a good spot for wildlife watching beyond just the bison and longhorns.

The park is also part of the Concho Loop wildlife trail. That trail connects multiple wildlife observation sites across the Concho Valley region. Check the TPWD website for directions and current visiting information.
