Water Supply
Lake Waco Is Part of the Brazos River Water System
Lake Waco is a key surface water source for McLennan County, impounding the Bosque Rivers as part of the broader Brazos River basin.
Lake Waco is an 8,465-acre reservoir that impounds the North, Middle, and South Bosque Rivers. It sits in the Brazos River Basin and is a major source of public water supply for the Waco area. The US Army Corps of Engineers manages the dam and many recreational facilities.
The county also relies on the Trinity Aquifer for some groundwater needs. Drought in Central Texas can stress both sources. Public water systems are required to report to TCEQ when supply is approaching less than 180 days. If you rely on a private well, the Southern Trinity Groundwater Conservation District oversees permits.
