Property Tax Exemption
File for a Homestead Exemption to Lower Your Tax Bill
Texas homeowners who live in their home can file for a homestead exemption that reduces the taxable value of the property.
A homestead exemption lowers the amount of your home's value that gets taxed. To get it, the home must be your main residence as of January 1 of the tax year. You file the application with McLennan Central Appraisal District (MCAD), not the tax office.
You only need to file once. If you move, file again for the new home. Extra exemptions exist for people 65 and older and for disabled persons. Check mclennancad.org for the current form and any deadlines, since Texas law can change these.
