River Flooding

The Brazos River is the main flood threat in Fort Bend County

The Brazos River runs diagonally through the county and can flood widely after heavy rain, especially in low-lying areas near the river.

The Brazos River cuts through Fort Bend County from northwest to southeast. It drains a huge watershed that stretches far north of the county. After heavy rains anywhere upstream, the river can rise fast and overflow. Flooding has been a recurring problem from Simonton to the Gulf.

Properties close to the river or along its tributaries and bayous carry higher flood risk. The county has levees in some areas, but not all properties are protected. Major flood events in recent decades have damaged thousands of homes.

Before buying near the Brazos or any creek, check the FEMA flood map and ask about the property's flood history. The county Drainage District maintains watershed studies and can explain local risk.
