Burn bans and outdoor burning rules in Brazos County
The Brazos County Commissioners Court can issue burn bans during dry or high-fire-danger periods, and violating a ban can result in a misdemeanor charge.
Brazos County sits in a region where dry springs and high winds can create elevated wildfire risk. The county judge or commissioners court can impose a burn ban on short notice during droughts or high fire danger periods. Past burn bans in 2024 and early 2026 prohibited all yard waste burning and open burning in unincorporated areas.
When a burn ban is in effect, outdoor cooking with a covered grill and welding are typically allowed with guidelines, but debris burning is not. Even when no ban is in effect, you should call Brazos County 9-1-1 Dispatch at 979-361-3888 before conducting a controlled burn so they can note it and let you know if conditions have changed.
Check current burn ban status at the official Brazos County website (brazoscountytx.gov) or through the Texas A&M Forest Service's statewide burn ban map at tfsweb.tamu.edu. Burn bans can be imposed and lifted quickly — always check the official source before you light anything.
