Choke Canyon State Park Has a Unit in Live Oak County

Choke Canyon State Park's South Shore unit sits in Live Oak County and gives you access to a 25,670-acre reservoir with strong bass and catfish fishing.

Choke Canyon State Park has two sections. The Calliham Unit (full-service, with camping) is in McMullen County. The South Shore Unit is in Live Oak County and is day-use only. Both are open daily 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Entry is $5 for adults; children 12 and under get in free.

The reservoir covers about 25,670 acres at full pool and was filled in 1982. Largemouth bass, blue catfish, crappie, and alligator gar are all popular targets. TPWD reports frequent catches of large bass and trophy alligator gar over six feet. Shore fishing does not require a fishing license. The park also attracts birders, especially during migration. Alligators are present — follow posted safety rules.
