James E. Daughtrey WMA Offers Public Hunting Near Choke Canyon

The 34,000-acre Daughtrey Wildlife Management Area spans Live Oak and McMullen counties and offers permitted public hunting in classic South Texas brush country.

The James E. Daughtrey WMA covers 34,000 acres across Live Oak and McMullen counties. It wraps around Choke Canyon Reservoir. The habitat is classic South Texas brush — mesquite, huisache, prickly pear, and live oak. White-tailed deer, javelina, wild turkey, dove, quail, and bobcat all live here.

Access for the general public is by permit only. Public use is generally allowed April 1 through August 1. Waterfowl hunters need an Annual Public Hunting (APH) permit. Fishing on the reservoir is accessible from designated public boat ramps. The WMA office is at 198 Wildlife Ranch Rd., Tilden, TX (361-274-3573). Check the TPWD website for current permit requirements and season dates before you plan a trip — they change.
