Cotton and Ranching Still Drive Fisher County's Agriculture

Fisher County has deep roots in cattle ranching and cotton farming, and agricultural land use affects how property is taxed and what restrictions may apply.

Cattle ranching came first to Fisher County in the 1870s. Cotton farming grew through the early 1900s, peaking in 1926 when more than 48,000 bales were ginned in the county. Today the main crops include cotton, wheat, sorghum, and hay, with cattle, sheep, and goats still common on ranches.

If you buy rural land in Fisher County, check whether it currently holds an agricultural special appraisal. That status lowers property taxes significantly. If you change the land's use away from agriculture, you may face rollback taxes. Texas also has a Right to Farm law that limits nuisance lawsuits against established farming operations — worth knowing if you plan to build near working ranches or feedlots. The appraisal district can confirm a property's current valuation status.
