Tom Green County Was Named for a Confederate General

Tom Green County was officially established on March 13, 1874, named for Confederate Brigadier General Thomas Green, who was killed in the Civil War.

The Texas Legislature created Tom Green County in 1874 from land that had been part of Bexar County. The county was named for Thomas Green, a Confederate officer who served in the Trans-Mississippi Department during the Civil War.

The county was first drawn without a northern boundary. That made it temporarily one of the largest counties in Texas. The boundary was finalized in 1876.

By 1880, ranchers, farmers, and soldiers had built a lasting presence in the area. The Santa Fe Railroad arrived in 1888. That turned San Angelo into a major cattle-shipping hub and helped the county grow fast.
