Davy Crockett National Forest: Public Land in Your Backyard
More than 160,000 acres of national forest land spans Houston and Trinity counties. It is free and open to the public for hiking, hunting, and fishing.
The Davy Crockett National Forest spreads across East Texas pineywoods. It sits in both Houston and Trinity counties. You can hike, camp, hunt, fish, and ride horses on this federal land. The Four C National Recreation Trail is a 20-mile route. It runs from Ratcliff Lake to the Neches Bluff Overlook. The Piney Creek Horse Trail runs about 53 miles through the forest. Ratcliff Lake is the main fishing spot inside the forest.
Hunting is allowed on national forest land. The Alabama Creek Wildlife Management Area covers 14,561 acres inside Trinity County. It is part of the forest. To hunt there, you need a Texas Hunting License and an Annual Public Hunting Permit from Texas Parks and Wildlife. The WMA is open year-round for many activities. Bring your own drinking water. There are no restroom facilities at Alabama Creek. Call the US Forest Service Supervisor's Office in Lufkin at 936-639-8501 for forest-wide questions.
