Homestead Exemption
Homestead Exemption: How to File in Trinity County
Texas homeowners can cut their property tax bill by filing a homestead exemption with the Trinity County Appraisal District.
A homestead exemption reduces the taxable value of the home you live in. For school district taxes, Texas law exempts $140,000 of your home's value. The county and other local taxing units may add their own exemptions on top of that. You only need to file once — the exemption stays in place as long as you own and live in the home.
To qualify, the home must be your principal residence as of January 1. You file Form 50-114 with the Trinity County Appraisal District. The general deadline is before May 1, but first-time filers who recently bought a home may still qualify mid-year. The appraisal district's office is at 123 S. Main St., Groveton. Call 936-642-1502 or check trinitycad.net for current forms and deadlines.
