Deer Hunters in Medina County Must Know the CWD Zone Rules
Chronic Wasting Disease has been detected in Medina County deer, and hunters must follow special check-in rules when hunting in the CWD zone.
Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal brain disease that affects deer. CWD was detected in a captive deer-breeding facility in Medina County in 2015 and later in wild deer. Parts of the county are in a CWD containment zone. Hunters there must present harvested deer at a check station — the Hondo location is at 1701 19th Street — within 48 hours of harvest.
There are also restrictions on moving whole deer carcasses out of the zone. Deer must generally be quartered or processed before leaving. The zone boundaries and rules can change each season. Always check the current TPWD Outdoor Annual or the CWD maps before you hunt in Medina County.
