New Water Wells in Medina County Require a Permit
The Medina County Groundwater Conservation District regulates new wells and requires permits before you drill.
If you want to drill a water well in Medina County, you need a permit first. The Medina County Groundwater Conservation District (MCGCD) is the agency that issues those permits. It oversees groundwater across the whole county.
The district covers parts of three Groundwater Management Areas. If your land sits over the Edwards Aquifer, you may also need to deal with the Edwards Aquifer Authority — that is a separate agency with its own rules.
Much of the county's groundwater comes from the Edwards Aquifer. The Medina River is the county's principal perennial stream. The MCGCD office is at 1607 Avenue K in Hondo. Call or visit them before you start drilling to learn about permit requirements, fees, and rules.
