Disabled veteran property tax exemptions in Brazos County

Texas veterans with a VA disability rating of 10% or higher can get a partial property tax exemption. Those rated 100% disabled get a full exemption on their home.

Texas law gives property tax relief to veterans with a service-connected disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The amount depends on the rating. A rating of 10–29% takes $5,000 off the appraised value. A rating of 30–49% takes off $7,500. A rating of 50–69% takes off $10,000. A rating of 70–100% takes off $12,000. These partial exemptions apply to any property the veteran owns.

Veterans with a 100% disability rating due to a service-connected disability — or rated individually unemployable — get a full property tax exemption on their primary home. Surviving spouses of qualifying veterans may also be eligible to keep the exemption.

The form you need depends on the exemption you are claiming. For the partial exemptions (10–100% ratings under Tax Code §11.22), use Texas Comptroller Form 50-135, "Application for Disabled Veteran's or Survivor's Exemption." For the full homestead exemption available to 100%-rated veterans under Tax Code §11.131, use Form 50-114, "Residence Homestead Exemption Application." Submit whichever form applies to Brazos CAD along with an official VA award letter showing your disability rating. You can file at any time. Download forms at brazoscad.org or contact the district at 979-774-4100.
