Dove Hunting
Dove Hunting Is a Fall Tradition on the Plains
Lubbock County's cotton and grain fields attract large numbers of mourning doves, making it a popular area for dove hunting each fall.
Dove season in Texas typically opens September 1 and runs in two splits through January. The flat farmland and grain fields of Lubbock County draw doves in large numbers during migration. Most hunting is on private farmland, so landowner permission is required.
You need a Texas hunting license, a Migratory Game Bird Endorsement, and free HIP (Harvest Information Program) certification to hunt doves. Season dates, bag limits, and other rules are set annually by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Texas Parks and Wildlife. Check the current Outdoor Annual for the latest rules before you go.
