Homestead Cap

The Homestead Cap Slows Tax Increases

Texas law limits how much your home's taxable value can rise each year once you have a homestead exemption.

Once you have an approved homestead exemption, Texas law caps how fast your home's appraised value can increase. The cap is 10 percent per year. So even if your home jumps in market value, your taxable value rises slowly.

This cap applies only to your residence homestead, and it affects the appraised value used by all taxing units — county, city, school district, and others. It does not apply when you first buy a home — the cap kicks in the year after your exemption is granted. The Lubbock CAD posts a plain-language explanation of how this works on their website.
