Homestead Exemption
Homestead Exemption Lowers Your Tax Bill
If your home is your main residence, you likely qualify for a homestead exemption that reduces what you pay in property taxes.
Texas requires school districts to give qualifying homeowners a $140,000 reduction in their home's taxable value. Other local taxing units can add their own exemptions on top of that. Together, these can meaningfully lower your annual tax bill.
You apply once through the Lubbock Central Appraisal District. The general filing deadline is before May 1 of the tax year, but verify the current deadline on the CAD website. Once approved, you do not have to reapply each year unless your status changes.
