Maverick County Sits Over the Eagle Ford Shale

The Eagle Ford Shale formation runs under Maverick County, making mineral rights and oil and gas activity relevant to anyone buying land here.

The Eagle Ford Shale is a major oil and gas formation. It starts near the Mexico border between Laredo and Eagle Pass. That puts Maverick County right at its western end.

Oil and gas production here goes back to the mid-1900s. The county reportedly had over 300 producing wells by 1970. Modern shale drilling has brought new interest in the formation.

If you are buying land, check whether mineral rights come with the surface. If they do not, an oil company with a valid lease can come onto your land to drill. You can look up permitted wells and production data on the Railroad Commission of Texas GIS viewer. The Railroad Commission also has resources explaining your rights as a landowner when oil and gas activity happens on your property.
