The East Fork of the Trinity River drains Kaufman County's western half
The East Fork Trinity and Cedar Creek are the two main waterways shaping flood risk, water supply, and recreation in Kaufman County.
Kaufman County has two main drainage areas. The East Fork of the Trinity River runs through the western half of the county toward Lake Ray Hubbard, which sits on the Dallas-Kaufman county line. Cedar Creek drains the eastern half and flows into Cedar Creek Reservoir. Both waterways can flood during heavy rain.
The Trinity River Authority of Texas manages water across the nearly 18,000-square-mile Trinity River basin. If you are looking at property near either stream, check FEMA flood maps for your specific parcel. Land near these streams may be in a Special Flood Hazard Area. That can raise your insurance costs and limit what you are allowed to build.
