Over-65 & Disability Exemption

Homeowners 65 and older get extra tax relief in Kaufman County

Once you turn 65, your school taxes can be frozen — meaning they cannot rise as long as you own and live in the home.

Texas lets homeowners who are 65 or older lock in their school district property taxes. Once you qualify, the school tax on your home cannot go above the amount you paid in the year you first qualified. This is called a school tax ceiling. You can transfer the ceiling to a different home if you move, though you would need to reapply.

Homeowners with qualifying disabilities can get a similar ceiling. An eligible person who is both disabled and 65 or older may claim benefits from different taxing units, but not both from the same taxing unit in the same year. Apply at the Kaufman Central Appraisal District with proof of age or disability. Check the KCAD website for the current deadline and forms.
