Homestead Exemption

File your homestead exemption with KCAD to lower your tax bill

Texas requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on their primary residence — but you must apply with the appraisal district to get it.

If you own and live in your home as your main residence, you likely qualify for a homestead exemption. This reduces the taxable value of your home, which lowers your school district tax. The state requires school districts to give a $140,000 exemption on a residence homestead. Some local taxing units offer additional exemptions on top of that.

You file one application with the Kaufman Central Appraisal District. The general deadline is before May 1 of the tax year, but check the KCAD website for current dates. You only need to apply once — the exemption stays unless your situation changes. Contact KCAD at 972-932-6081 or visit kaufman-cad.org.
