The Edwards Aquifer recharge zone runs through Bexar County and is protected by state law

Rain falling on the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone in Bexar County seeps into the limestone to refill the region's drinking water supply, and state and local rules restrict development over the most sensitive areas.

The Edwards Aquifer recharge zone is a stretch of porous limestone where rainwater soaks quickly into the underground aquifer. In Bexar County, this zone runs through the northwest part of the city and county. When pavement and rooftops cover the recharge zone, less water gets through to the aquifer.

Texas law and local rules limit certain land uses over the recharge zone. TCEQ's Edwards Aquifer Protection Program controls activities that could contaminate or reduce recharge. The City of San Antonio and Bexar County also require extra environmental review for development projects in this area.

Government Canyon State Natural Area sits directly over the recharge zone. Protecting recharge is one of the park's stated goals. If you are buying land in north or northwest Bexar County, ask whether the property is in the recharge or contributing zone. This can affect what you can build and how you must handle stormwater. Check TCEQ's Edwards Aquifer Protection Program at tceq.texas.gov for regulated activities.
