Vehicle Emissions
Cars registered in Kaufman County must pass an annual emissions test
Kaufman County is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth emissions testing area, so most gasoline vehicles need an emissions inspection every year.
Kaufman County is inside the DFW air quality program area. That means most gas-powered vehicles registered here need an emissions test every year. The test checks what your car puts into the air. It is separate from the regular safety check. Texas combines both into one sticker. The program is called 'Two Steps, One Sticker.'
Not every vehicle needs the emissions test. Vehicles newer than two model years are exempt. So are vehicles older than 24 model years, all-electric vehicles, diesel-powered vehicles, and antiques. If your car fails or skips the test, you cannot renew your registration. Go to the TCEQ website to find a certified testing station near you.
