El Paso Is an Emissions-Test County — Not Just a Safety Inspection

Vehicles registered in El Paso County must pass an emissions inspection every year — skipping it means you cannot renew your registration.

Texas changed its vehicle inspection system in 2025. Safety inspections for most personal vehicles are no longer required statewide. But El Paso County is one of 17 Texas counties that still require an emissions inspection. You must pass the emissions test before you can renew your registration.

The process is called Two Steps, One Sticker: get your emissions inspection first, then renew your registration. You can find your Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) at mytxcar.org. The El Paso County Tax Office handles registration. Check the TxDMV website for the current inspection calendar, since your inspection window depends on your registration month.
