No fishing license is needed inside Texas State Parks in Bexar County
Texas parks visitors can fish inside state park boundaries without a Texas fishing license—a useful rule for families visiting state parks near San Antonio.
Texas law provides that no fishing license is required for anyone fishing within the property boundary of a Texas State Park. This exemption applies regardless of age. So if you are fishing in the waters inside Government Canyon State Natural Area or another state park, the regular day-use fee is all you need.
This exemption does not extend to fishing on public lakes, rivers, or other waters outside the park boundary. Anyone fishing in those locations—including on private land and on public waterways such as the San Antonio River or Medina Lake—needs a valid Texas fishing license unless another specific exemption applies (such as free fishing days designated by TPWD).
Fishing license fees and regulations change each year. Buy current licenses online at tpwd.texas.gov or from a licensed retail agent. TPWD also designates specific free fishing days each year when no license is required anywhere in Texas. Check the TPWD Outdoor Annual at tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual for current rules.
