Flood Insurance Rate Maps for Fort Bend County were revised after a five-year study; look up your address before you buy.
Fort Bend County and FEMA completed an intensive five-year flood mapping project. The current Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) took effect April 2, 2014. They show which areas are in high-risk flood zones where lenders require flood insurance.
You can look up any address using FEMA's Flood Map Service Center at msc.fema.gov or Fort Bend County's own floodplain mapping tool. The county's Drainage District also manages levees and watershed studies that can affect local flood risk.
Even if you are not in a high-risk zone, Fort Bend has a history of flooding from the Brazos River and its tributaries. Flood insurance can be purchased in any zone. Check with the county Drainage District at 281-342-3411 for questions about a specific property.
