Building Near a Creek in the County Needs a Permit

In unincorporated Dallas County, any construction inside a mapped floodplain requires a county floodplain development permit.

Dallas County manages floodplain rules for areas outside city limits. If you plan to build, add a structure, or change the grading of the land near a creek or drainage area, you may need a Floodplain Development Permit from the county.

Contact the Dallas County Public Works floodplain manager at 214-653-7426. You can also check the floodplain page at dallascounty.org. Building inside a floodplain without the required permit can result in fines. It can also cause problems with your flood insurance. When in doubt, call the county before you start any work near water.
