Fort Richardson State Park: History and Outdoor Access in Jacksboro
Fort Richardson State Park in Jacksboro preserves original 1860s Army buildings and offers camping, hiking, fishing, and horseback riding.
The U.S. Army built Fort Richardson in 1867 near Jacksboro. It was the northernmost of Texas's frontier forts. The fort protected settlers from raids until the Army abandoned it in 1878. Today TPWD runs the site as a state park.
Visitors can tour surviving historic buildings, camp overnight, fish in two lakes, hike, bike, and ride horses. Daily admission for adults is $4; children 12 and under get in free. Historic building tours run on a set schedule — check the park's page for current hours. Camping reservations are recommended, especially in spring and fall.
