Mineral Rights
Oil and Gas Activity in Jack County
Jack County has a long oil and gas history, and mineral rights here are often owned separately from the land surface.
Oil was discovered near Bryson in 1923 and helped shape the county's economy. By the end of 2004, cumulative production had reached approximately 204 million barrels (203,811,409 barrels). Active drilling still occurs in the county today.
In Texas, the mineral estate is legally separate from the surface. When you buy land, you may not own the oil and gas underneath it. Always check the deed and title carefully. The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) regulates oil and gas activity here. Jack County falls under RRC District 9, based in Wichita Falls. You can look up well records and permits on the RRC website.
