Flood Risk
Flash Flooding Is a Real Risk Along the Rivers
The Frio and Nueces rivers run through McMullen County and can flood quickly — check FEMA flood maps before buying near the water.
McMullen County is drained mainly by the Nueces River and the Frio River. Both rivers can rise fast after heavy rain. Low-water crossings on rural roads can become dangerous or impassable with little warning. If you are buying land near either river, check the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for your specific parcel. Properties in a 100-year floodplain may require flood insurance.
FEMA flood maps are free to search at the FEMA Map Service Center. The Nueces Regional Flood Planning Group (Region 13) also tracks flood risk and planning for this part of Texas. If you are in an unincorporated area, there may be no local flood warning system — knowing your elevation and proximity to the river matters.
