Groundwater & Wells

A local water district oversees wells in Coke County

The Coke County Underground Water Conservation District regulates groundwater, so if you plan to drill a water well, you will need to work with this district.

Coke County is a rural, dry county in West Texas. Many rural properties rely on private wells for water. The Coke County Underground Water Conservation District was created in 1985 to manage those groundwater resources. It is one of 20 districts in Groundwater Management Area 7. The district sets rules for new wells, including permit requirements and spacing from property lines.

If you buy rural land or plan to build, find out early whether the property has an existing well or needs a new one. Before you drill, contact the district or check the Texas Water Development Board's groundwater conservation district directory at twdb.texas.gov to confirm current permit requirements.
