Water Wells
Frio County Has a Groundwater District That Regulates Wells
The Evergreen Underground Water Conservation District covers all of Frio County and requires permits or registration for most new water wells.
If you plan to drill a water well in Frio County, you need to deal with the Evergreen Underground Water Conservation District (EUWCD). Frio County joined this district in 1985. The district covers Frio, Atascosa, Wilson, and Karnes counties. Its rules are set to protect shared groundwater resources.
Non-exempt wells must get a permit before drilling. Even most exempt wells must be registered with the district before work begins. The district's published rules set a drilling permit fee, with part of that fee refunded when you submit the required driller's log — contact the EUWCD directly for the current fee schedule, as amounts can change. There are also well spacing rules based on production capacity. Visit evergreenuwcd.org or call the district office in Pleasanton for current rules and fees.
