Frio County Sits in Prime South Texas Hunting Country
Frio County is in the South Texas Plains, one of the state's top regions for white-tailed deer, feral hog, and dove hunting on private ranch land.
The South Texas Plains region, which includes Frio County, is known across the state for deer hunting. Most land here is privately owned, so most hunting access comes through paid leases or outfitters. TPWD assigns wildlife biologists to Frio County to help landowners with wildlife habitat and management.
Nearby Choke Canyon Reservoir, in neighboring Live Oak and McMullen counties, offers public fishing and some public hunting access through the James E. Daughtrey Wildlife Management Area. You need a valid TPWD license and, for some hunts, an Annual Public Hunting permit. Always check current TPWD regulations before your trip, as seasons and rules change each year.
