Water Supply
Groundwater and Wells in Pecos County
Pecos County sits above several aquifers, but water quality can vary widely and may need treatment before drinking.
The Pecos Valley Aquifer is one of the main water sources under Pecos County. It supplies water for irrigation, municipal use, and industry. But the water is often hard. In some areas it has high levels of chloride and sulfate from past oil field activity. In other spots, arsenic or naturally occurring radioactive elements can exceed safe drinking limits. If you have or plan to drill a private well, test the water before you use it.
The Middle Pecos Groundwater Conservation District regulates wells in the area. If you want to drill a new well, you may need a permit from the district first. Check their rules before you start. The Texas Water Development Board tracks aquifer data across the state if you want to look up historical water level trends for your area.
