Homestead Exemption
How to Apply for a Homestead Exemption in Pecos County
If your home is your main residence, you can apply for a homestead exemption that lowers your property tax bill.
A homestead exemption removes part of your home's value from taxation. You apply at the Pecos County Appraisal District in Fort Stockton. You must show that the home is your main residence. You will need a copy of your Texas driver's license or state ID with the property address on it.
Texas also offers extra exemptions for people age 65 and older and for people with disabilities. These can create a tax ceiling — meaning the school portion of your tax bill cannot go up as long as you stay in the home. The general deadline to apply is before May 1, but check the appraisal district's website for the current date. Late applications may still be accepted under some conditions.
