Groundwater

A local water district oversees groundwater in the county

The Plum Creek Conservation District and Gonzales County Underground Water Conservation District both operate in parts of Caldwell County and regulate water wells.

Much of rural Caldwell County gets its water from underground wells. The Plum Creek Conservation District covers a large part of the county. The Gonzales County Underground Water Conservation District also operates in parts of the county. If you plan to drill a new well, you will likely need a permit from whichever district covers your land.

Permits help manage how much water is pulled from shared underground sources called aquifers. Before you buy land where you want to drill a well, contact the district that covers that area. Ask about permit rules and whether any existing well on the property is registered. This step can prevent costly surprises after you buy.
