Water Supply in Kleberg County Relies on Groundwater

Many communities in Kleberg County depend on groundwater wells, and some small water systems have only a single source — a risk worth knowing before you buy rural land.

The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) tracks water planning for each county. In South Texas counties like Kleberg, smaller public water systems sometimes rely on a limited number of sources. If you are buying rural land outside city limits, ask whether the property uses a private well or connects to a rural water system.

Private wells in Texas are not treated the same as public water systems. You do not need a state license to drill a well on your own land. But the driller must be licensed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The TWDB has groundwater data for the Kleberg area. A local well driller or the TWDB can tell you about aquifer depth and water quality where you plan to buy.
