Groundwater wells and permits in Brazos County

Brazos County sits over productive aquifer systems managed by the Brazos Valley Groundwater Conservation District, which regulates well permits and water use in the county.

The Brazos Valley Groundwater Conservation District — called BVGCD — covers Brazos and Robertson counties. It manages the aquifers beneath the region and works to prevent waste and protect water for current and future users.

Many private wells used only for home or livestock use do not need a district permit. Commercial and high-volume wells typically need an operating permit. The permit states how much water you can withdraw and for what use. Permits must be renewed, and the district charges a production fee based on volume withdrawn — per thousand gallons for municipal and most other permit types, or per acre-foot for agricultural and power generation uses. Check current exemption thresholds with the BVGCD directly.

Active water-rights disputes over large export pumping permits could affect future water supply in the county. Bryan, College Station, Texas A&M, and local well owners have all been involved in proceedings before the BVGCD. Contact the district at brazosvalleygcd.org or 112 W. 3rd St., Hearne, TX for current rules and permit applications.
