Historic Building

The 1913 Henderson County Courthouse is a Classical Revival landmark

The Henderson County Courthouse in Athens, completed in 1914, features a Classical Revival design with a central dome and is still in use today.

Work on the current Henderson County Courthouse started in 1913 and finished in January 1914. The building is red brick with three floors above a full basement. It has a central dome and four entrances with Tuscan columns. This style is called Classical Revival. Many Texas courthouses built around that time share the same look.

Boy Scouts planted the trees around the courthouse when it was built. The building stands on the Athens square and still serves as an active county government building. It replaced earlier courthouses, including one that burned down in 1885.
