How to apply for the homestead exemption in Andrews County

Texas homeowners can lower their property tax bill with a homestead exemption. You apply through the Andrews County Appraisal District — not the tax office.

If you own and live in your home as your main home, you likely qualify. The Andrews County Appraisal District (ACAD) handles the application. School districts must subtract at least $140,000 from your home's appraised value before figuring your school tax. That can save you hundreds of dollars each year.

Use Texas Comptroller Form 50-114 to apply. That form is called the Application for Residence Homestead Exemption. Filing is free. ACAD has warned people about scams that charge a fee for this free service. You must own the home on January 1 of the tax year. The home must be your main residence. You can only claim one homestead — in Texas or anywhere else.

Extra exemptions are available. If you are age 65 or older, have a disability, or are a disabled veteran, you may qualify for more savings. The general deadline to file is before May 1 of the tax year. Check with ACAD to confirm the current deadline. Call ACAD at 432-523-9111 or visit andrewscad.org.
