Andrews County vehicles no longer need a safety inspection to register

As of January 1, 2025, Texas dropped the annual safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles. Andrews County is not an emissions-testing county, so most drivers just pay a small fee at registration.

Texas House Bill 3297 took effect January 1, 2025. It ended the required annual vehicle safety inspection for non-commercial vehicles across the state. Andrews County is not one of the roughly 17 major metro counties that require emissions testing. So most drivers here no longer need any inspection before registering their vehicle.

You will still pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee each year when you renew your registration. That fee helps support the inspection system that still applies to commercial vehicles and emissions-testing counties. New vehicles pay a one-time fee of $16.75, which covers the first two years.

Commercial vehicles must still be inspected. Vehicles in designated emissions counties — areas around Dallas, Houston, Austin, El Paso, and San Antonio — must also still be inspected. You can register your vehicle online at MyTXCar.org, by mail, in person at the Andrews County Tax Assessor-Collector at 210 NW 2nd St., or through the Texas by Texas app. Check txdmv.gov for current requirements, since rules can change.
