Mule deer hunting in Andrews County has a 20-inch antler rule
Andrews County is mule deer country, but state rules set a minimum 20-inch outside spread for legal bucks — know the restriction before you hunt.
Andrews County falls within a mule deer antler restriction area managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). A legal buck must have an outside spread of the main beams of at least 20 inches. Any buck with at least one unbranched antler (a spike) cannot be harvested unless it meets that 20-inch spread. The annual bag limit is two mule deer, with no more than one buck.
General season typically runs in late November to early December, with an archery-only period starting in late September. Season dates can change from year to year. Always confirm current dates and rules in the TPWD Outdoor Annual before heading out — the online version at tpwd.texas.gov is updated for each license year.
You need a valid Texas hunting license and a deer tag (included with most hunting licenses) before you hunt. Hunter education is required for anyone born on or after September 2, 1971. Most hunting in Andrews County is on private ranch land, so permission from the landowner is essential. Public hunting access in this area is limited — check the TPWD public hunting map to see if any permitted areas apply.
