Homestead Exemption

Homestead Exemption Lowers Your Tax Bill

If you live in your home as your main residence, you can apply for an exemption that reduces what you owe in property taxes.

A general homestead exemption lowers the taxable value of your home, which reduces your school district taxes. Owners who are 65 or older get an extra exemption on top of that. People with disabilities may also qualify. You apply once — you do not need to reapply every year unless the CAD asks you to.

As of 2022, you can apply partway through the year if you bought and moved in recently. You need a Texas driver's license or ID showing the home address. There is no fee to apply. Download the form at the Coryell CAD website or pick one up at their Gatesville or Copperas Cove office.
