Flood & Road Safety
Low-Water Crossings Turn Dangerous Fast
The Leon River and Cowhouse Creek can rise quickly, making rural road crossings deadly during storms.
Coryell County has many FM and county roads that cross streams at low-water crossings — flat sections of road that water flows over when rivers rise. During heavy rain, these crossings can flood with little warning. The county has closed 22 county roads at once during major flood events.
The Leon River runs through the northern part of the county, and Cowhouse Creek drains the western and southern areas. Both have flooded roads and homes in past storms. The National Weather Service tracks these rivers and issues warnings when levels rise. Before driving rural roads after heavy rain, check weather.gov for current flood warnings in Coryell County.
