Homestead Exemption
Homestead Exemption Lowers Your School Tax Bill
If you live in the home you own in Dimmit County, a homestead exemption can reduce the taxable value of your property.
Texas law requires school districts to give homeowners a $140,000 exemption on the value of a primary residence. That means Carrizo Springs ISD taxes your home on a lower amount. Other local taxing units can add their own exemptions on top of that.
To qualify, the home must be your main residence and you must own it. You file a one-time application with the Dimmit County Appraisal District. The general deadline is around May 1, but check with the appraisal district for the current date. There are also larger exemptions for seniors (65+) and people with disabilities — ask the appraisal district for details.
